The race was inspired by my participation in 2012 Barmouth to Fort William 3 Peaks Yacht Race (that is me on the left at the finish) as a member of the "Brioche Boys". This race involves running up Snowden, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis and is the ultimate yachting adventure race. We were a scratch crew of not well prepared enthusiasts in a not at all racy Beneteau Oceanis family cruising yacht. We had 3 sails, a main a furling genoa and a large spinaker. Needless to say we didn't win but we had had an absolutely wonderful 5 day adventure and finished within 24 hours of the winner.
However its 5 day duration and the complicated logistics of getting boats from their home ports to the start and back from the finish mean this race it is only accessible to the lucky few.
The SW 3 PYR has been designed to make this type of adventure race accessible to more people.
Yachts with a crew of 6 enter, with 2 of the crew needing to complete each of the shore tasks. The first “Peak” is actually Lands End, the second Brown Willy and the third Yes Tor.
Yachts start in St Mawes, sail to Newlyn, then Fowey and finish in Plymouth. The race was first run in 2013 and was won by Team Hobbit from Fowey sailing a J111 in a total time of 30 hours and 27 minutes.
